A disparate collection of 20th century folk recordings, from several regions of the islands of Japan. Magicians; a traditional rain dance performed with umbrellas; a devotional to a hot spring – sung at
the baths with the tempo pounded out in the water; Tsugaru shamisen, the percussive style specific
to the north; work songs and dances of field and sea. Thunder crack, horse-back rhythms from a
pre-concrete, pre-economic bubble era.
Thanks to Tim at Iris for letting me loose in the booth.
